The input-output-hk/cardano-sl GitHub repository is the location where the Cardano Settlement Layer (SL) is hosted. Cardano SL, maintained by Input Output Hong Kong (IOHK), is the implementation of the Cardano protocol which maintains the blockchain and transaction logic.

This repository is primarily written in Haskell, a functional programming language cherished for its high degree of correctness which is ideal for financial and blockchain applications where bugs could cost millions of dollars. Other languages such as Nix and Shell are also used within the repo.

Various elements of the Cardano blockchain such as wallet, node, explorer, reporting and so on, are included in this repo. Cardano SL provides interfaces for interaction with a wallet, creating transactions, inspecting the state of the blockchain and more.

Please note, as per the latest comments in the repository, this repository is deprecated and no longer maintained. The software in this repo is being used in the Cardano Byron era. Most work has moved onto the Cardano-node repo, which is being used in the later Shelley and Goguen eras.

The codebase offers a rich history of the evolution of the Cardano network. However, as a potential contributor or user, you should focus on the new repositories where active development is happening.
