"Theia" is a project developed under the Eclipse Foundation. The main aim of the eclipse-theia/theia repository is to provide a framework for building multi-language Cloud & Desktop Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) with state-of-the-art web technologies.
Theia comes with a flexible architecture that allows developers to develop and distribute a wide range of tools. It uses a micro-service approach to build language tools, debuggers, etc. with a front-end and back-end separation. Hence, it can work both as a desktop application as well as a cloud IDE.
It is designed to be extensible and customizable so that developers can include their own extensions or packages. Theia supports VS Code extensions which means developers get to use the rich feature set of VS Code extensions.
Here are some key highlights:
Theia is backed by some huge companies such as Google, RedHat, Ericsson, IBM, ARM and TypeFox. It's been adopted by Google for Google Cloud Shell, ARM for their Mbed Studio and SAP for their Business Application Studio.
Disclaimer: This project is fairly large and complex, you may need to dig in deep if you plan to use it. There is good documentation and an active community to help you get started.
